HERB RACK

As part of our homestead project, we are revamping our backyard into a soil garden, and one of the first installation piece is a simple vertical pallet herb rack. Crafted by Ruwanhasitha and painted by Seedemfall. This herb rack uses a dumpster-dive reclaimed delivery pallet cut in half, cleaned and treated, decorated, adding a soil containment layer and 2 through pipes drilled along their lengths for even water and nutrient distribution, then seeded with various herb plants, gives easily accessible herb use for the adjacent barbecue station.

Ruwan, an asylum seeker in limbo for 13 years in Hong Kong, by now skilled in multiple fields of artisan works and lived off his sweat and the kindness of sympathetic souls through necessity for survival; and Tik, an outlier of society who went through many odd jobs due to her differences but also to learn and cohabited in many alternative dwellings with those like her; combined what they know to make this beautiful and functional piece happen.

Before, some of the old pallets are reused but soon enough they simply go into landfill. Thanks to advancement of techniques also the people's awareness, the fate of used pallets found a good turn as many are recycled for its material and made into new things like furniture and planting boxes. Take care to clean them well of their dubious pasts and one can obtain from it some of the strongest, most durable wood, as each once were built to carry up to 2000kg (source: google search). Save yourself some costs and save some trees.
